David Bowie

September 14th, 2007 by Nate

David Bowie is fast becoming one of my favorite washed-up musicians…

This clip is from “Flight of the Conchords” on HBO. Funny show, hilarious clip. I’ve been quoting this for weeks.

This clip is from Ricky Gervais’s latest brilliant endeavor, “Extras” on BBC. The chorus is catchy. A little too catchy… (Warning. some language.)

What Your Car Says About You…

September 4th, 2007 by Nate

My aunt sent me an article from MSN Dating a little while ago called On The Road To Love that talked about what your car says about you as a lover. This is what the article had to say about drivers of little red (or yellow) convertibles:

What the car says about its owner: While it’s easy to assume
that the owner of a shiny convertible is either flashy or going through
a midlife crisis, Dr. Orbuch suggests otherwise: “Someone who drives
this kind of car has two sides, each of which is revealed depending on
the setting.” She says its driver can have a shy streak (a sexy car is
akin to a conversation-starter), but in general (and especially in
relationships) this person is an alpha-type.

What the car says about its owner’s love style: The
convertible’s driver likes to lead a stylish life—so his or her mate
had better appreciate that flair, too. What’s more, Dr. Orbuch
observes, “someone who is social, outgoing and extremely comfortable
with others is a good fit. If you’re the driver, you will have no
problem if your mate is magnetically charismatic, just as long as he or
she can loop arms and feel safe while you do the shining.”

So what do you think? Accurate? The cars that are covered in the article are:

  • A fully loaded SUV
  • A red (yellow) convertible
  • A station wagon
  • A Honda Accord or other sensible sedan
  • A Jeep Wrangler or FJ Cruiser
  • A Toyota Prius or other hybrid (ed: gra-no-la)
  • A BMW or other luxury sedan

Feel free to check it out. How true is it for you?

The Elderly

August 25th, 2007 by Nate

The vast majority of the elderly are sure of two things: One, that they know everything, and if they don’t already know it, then it’s obviously not worth knowing. Two, they know that they’re going to die soon anyway, so they don’t have to worry about little things like “getting along with other people” and “obeying the law.”

This is, of course, a dangerous combination, as it leads to such things as old ladies driving their cars years after they should have given up their licenses. Never mind that their mere, slow, unpredictable presence on the roads poses not only a health risk to their fellow drivers, but their driving has traffic violation written all over it. But don’t try to talk to them about it. Trust me.

Disclaimer: I love my grandparents. But they frighten me when they drive. And don’t discuss politics with them. Ever.

That’s it. I’ve had it. Whoever keeps sending the sometimes gross and usually lame comments to my blog under random (but comment-related) pseudonyms, knock it off. I’m tired of marking your comments as spam.

What’s In A Name?

August 6th, 2007 by Nate

Some readers of the blog are doubtless aware of the fact that I recently purchased a Spa-yellow 2001 Honda S2000. As I was driving it off the lot and over to my grandparents house, three of the 5 nuts on my right front wheel flew off, leaving my car disabled. Fortunately, I was less than a block from my grandparents house when this happened, so I managed to limp the car to their driveway so a towtruck could come and get it.

Naturally, my grandparents were highly amused that I had just spent so much on a purchase which they no doubt looked upon as being frivolous and impractical. As part of the (relatively) good-natured ribbing I received as a result of this incident, my grandpa started calling my car “the little yellow bomb.” Of course, everybody thought that this was hilarious, and the name started to stick, much to my chagrin.

Fast forward to yesterday. A friend of mine asked me what I had named my car (what is it with naming cars?). I told her it was called the yellow bomb and then I realized how far the cancer had spread and I decided then and there that no car of mine would be named the little yellow bomb.

So this friend asked what gender my car was. Of course I said female. I’m not waxing a dude car. Sorry. I then made a quick calculation of my car’s attributes: fast. yellow. high-maintainance (for a Honda). And as porly as this reflects upon me as well as my car, the next word that came to mind was “stripper.” And what’s the ultimate stripper name? Candy! (I can verify this because when I asked one of my coworkers to come up with a good stripper name, the first name he said was Candy. Sorry to all you ladies out there named Candy. You have a stripper name.)

Apparently, however, this name has not been well-received by the public in general, so I’m still in the hunt for a good name to call my car (NOT the little yellow bomb or any iteration thereof). Just keep to the guidlines: female car, probably a hot blond. Leave suggestions in the comments and after an unspecified period of time (whenever I feel like it), I’ll decide on a name. Hopefully sooner than later.

In the meantime, here’s a couple of photos of my car that I photoshopped that you can use for inspiration.

Kick ‘Em To The Curb

July 10th, 2007 by Nate

In a move that I have to appreciate, Sprint Kicks Whiners To The Curb. Now, before you get mad, consider that we’ve all had to deal with whiny people who simply won’t be satisfied. Let’s face it, chronic whiners suck. And when you have a friend who acts that way, it doesn’t take you very long before you start screening their calls, hiding when they ring your doorbell, and *gasp* blocking them on your chat clients. And the best part is that nobody will begrudge you that.

I honestly can’t blame Sprint for doing the same thing that any one of us would do. In fact, I think that in a world where it seems that companies are walking on eggshells to preserve their corporate image, it’s refreshing to see that Sprint is willing to make what is most definitely a smart decision regardless of possible PR blowback. But don’t take my word for it. Listen to what Seth has to say about it.

Now think about this in terms of your own life: Do you spend a lot of time, effort, and energy trying to please that one person who always runs you down? Are you always trying to impress the unimpressible or satisfy the constantly critical? Maybe it’s time to give them a mental kick to the curb as well.

100th Post

June 28th, 2007 by Nate

This is officially the 100th post on Towering Intellect. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve gone months without a post. So, in honor of the many times you have checked on my blog only to see that I STILL haven’t written anything, with this 100th post i dedicate myself to regular (more than once a week) posts on the blog. Some of the goodness in store:

  • I’m starting to use David Allen’s Getting Things Done program. I’ll be doing a series of posts chronicling my successes, failures, difficulties and thoughts about the program. I’m hoping that it’ll be motivation for others to use the program, which is really cool, fundamentally. And I love spreading coolness.
  • In honor of this 100th post, I’m going to add some interesting functionality to my list of 100 things to do before I die. I’ve had a hard time coming up with a really suitable list of 100 things, so I’m going to try to find something that allows visitors to add stuff to the list and vote on the various items to rank them. I’m thinking that maybe by inviting democracy into my life goals will result in some awesome suggestions. If you know of a plugin or something that will let me do that, leave me a comment.
  • I just bought a spa-yellow 2001 Honda S2000. It’s a sweet ride, and I expect to gush about it periodically on the blog.
  • Living in Provo, sometimes the urge to rant hits. Prepare to feel the wrath when it does.
  • And finally, two words: brain dump.

So thanks for reading. And here’s to the next hundred posts, may they be funnier, more informative, and better written than the last.
