Illegal Immigration: Finally a solution
I have recently been introduced to what I believe could be a solution to the problem of illegal immigration. Any man or woman of any nationality desiring to enter the country should be presented with the option to serve in the United States military to effectively “earn” citizenship. Those that choose to serve would then be granted permission to enter the country as a citizen, those that do not would be denied that privilege. Before they ever set foot on American soil they would be providing a tremendous service to the United States. In addition these foreign soldiers would be earning scholarship money from the government to attend college after their tour of duty, again serving to benefit the country. I can see no negatives, its brilliant. Who do I need to write to see this idea deliberated in congress?

Are you concerned at all that we would have people defending our freedom who are not yet really Americans? I mean, how passionate can you be about the liberties for a country that you technically aren’t even a member of yet?
That being said, I think it is a creative solution to the immigration problem. I would like to read more discussion on this idea.

I tend to agree with Preston that this may be a difficult solution, particularly in an era where terrorism is fast becoming the combat style of choice. I could see this being an excellent opportunity for terrorist groups to place sleeper cells within the US military. However, there could also be a seive effect should military service be made mandatory for US citizenship. For example: For years the U.K. allowed radical political exiles asylum with little or no regulation. Upon arriving in England, many of these radicals began to vilify and condemn the country that allowed them asylum, and in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks that have rocked the U.K., it has come to light that many of these radicals were influential in the attack. Perhaps if individuals had to fight to gain their freedom, they might have a greater appreciation for the privilege of being a citizen of a truly free country.

I can see where there would be some hesitation in arming foriegn soldiers. Wouldn’t make much sense to arm middle easterns and then attack so perhaps to dispel any “ideas” our new mercenaries would have we could hold one of their family members hostage until they have completed their service and have spent some time proving their allegience to their new home. Or we could scare them straight by threatening to castrate them if they misbehave. That would scare me!
